An excerpt from She Called It, Wolf
Instead of waiting for him to call her out of the bushes, EJ walked toward him with the pup in her hands. During the night he had started to change from boy to wolf and back more often. To EJ’s eyes the pup was having troubles maintaining a shape. Also, the energy involved with the change would be a terrible drain on the boy. She wondered if this would kill the pup. She was concerned.
Owen growled at her, “did you do this?”
“Of course not,” she said. “I was here for another reason and found them in a government building a few miles down the road. By the way did you know they were experimenting on the children? Did you know they could make a child transform?”
The horror in Owen’s eyes told her everything. It was a bad thing for a boy as young as ten to transform.
Owen picked up the pup gently and murmured to him. Then he said to EJ, “You have the baby?” EJ nodded yes. “Then I’ll have someone meet you down the road. I need to get Micky to Adam. He is the only one to stop this. You’ll be careful with my niece and nephew?” He didn’t wait, but ran down the road. Benny wanted to run after his uncle, but EJ restrained him.
“We’ll see him soon,” she said softly. She picked up the baby, and checked her diaper. She could smell the soft smell of sour milk. She rocked her as she walked down the road. Benny kept up while the goats walked around them, snatching bits of brush as they went. They would get rescued, but they would still have to watch out for the guards from the research lab. It was hard to get too worked up about it when they were so tired. When you are this tired, you could make mistakes. She kept her guard up and followed the road.
Near the Government Research Facility
The sagebrush filled the air with its scent as Owen raced towards his truck he had left about ten miles down the road. He wished he had brought it closer, but he had not wanted Agent Foster to realize that Sheriff Adam and the entire community were onto him. The agent had sold them out to the feds. There was a good possibility that the feds had been excited to use their facilities to find out more about the were-wolves.
